Experience the village of Aggius with Etnosfera, the Festival of peoples and music

Now in its second edition, the festival alternates between music, literature, poetry, meetings, and screenings. From 30th June, enjoy an unforgettable experience for three consecutive days.

Unique in its kind, the Etnosfera festival is an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity and local traditions, offering an unforgettable experience in the heart of Aggius.

This exceptional event, completely free of charge, is organised by Pro Loco Aggius, with the support of the Municipality and the Fondazione di Sardegna, as well as the valuable contribution of Delphina hotels & resorts, the Department of Cultural Heritage, Information, Entertainment and Sports of the Sardinia Region, and Talk About Records. The festival will take place in the streets, squares, and parks of the picturesque historic centre of Aggius, from 30th June to 2nd July, offering, through music, literature, poetry, history, meetings, and screenings, an unforgettable experience for three consecutive days.

AAA Historical Photos and Videos of Aggius Wanted

The organisers are launching the second edition with a call for film, actively involving all the residents of Aggius in the search for historical photos and videos to include in a short film. On this special occasion, a unique short film is being organised, which will tell the story and culture of the village using the material collected from the local community.

The short film will be screened on Sunday, 2nd July in the evocative Piazza del Rosario. The carefully edited images will allow viewers to relive the most significant moments in Aggius’ history and appreciate the village’s evolution over the years.
To make the event even more magical, there will be an original soundtrack composed by the Gallurese artist Paolo Angeli, inspired by the repertoire of canto a Tasgia, the traditional choral singing of Aggius. His musical compositions will accompany the images, creating an evocative atmosphere that will amaze all those who attend the screening.

“It will be thrilling to sing some of the best-known songs from the Aggius repertoire for the village community. The singing of Aggius is a precious gem that I consider, for its uniqueness, to be among the most beautiful traditional oral music of the entire Mediterranean” declared Paolo Angeli.

Etnosfera: The Festival that Bridges the “Local” and the “Global”

This festival, dedicated to linguistic minorities and cultural diversity, celebrates local traditions by preserving and enhancing the richness of civilizations and artistic heritage. It will be a unique opportunity for everyone to immerse themselves in collective memory, rediscovering the traditions, people, and events that have helped shape the identity of the place. But that’s not all. In line with the first edition, the dialogue with other festivals that share a focus on linguistic and cultural diversity continues. A partner for the 2023 edition is FolkBooks, a thematic festival from Salento dedicated to the latest and most important productions in the folk and world movement.

The rich artistic programme also features numerous renowned artists, including the talented performer Arrogalla, the singer-songwriter Claudia Crabuzza, the famous DJ Nickodemus, and the extraordinary voices of Ilaria Porceddu and Alessia Tondo. The festival’s artistic direction is jointly managed by Marco Lutzu, ethnomusicologist and lecturer at the University of Cagliari, and Diego Pani, ethnomusicologist, musician, and record producer.

Marco Lutzu says: “We are proud to host an event that highlights cultural identities and centres on traditional musical productions and their reinterpretations. In Aggius, we will have the pleasure of hosting Vincenzo Santoro, a renowned writer and scholar of tarantism, as well as the artistic director of FolkBooks. Having him with us will be an important opportunity to discuss the analogies with the argia rituals in Sardinia”.

Aggius: The Stone Village to Discover during Etnosfera

During the festival, visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the charming village of Aggius and explore numerous spectacular viewpoints and the sets chosen by the organisers: the Capitza park nestled among granite rocks and cork trees; the Gjocu di La Pampana square (Hopscotch game) with its numbered squares in single file; the Meoc Ethnographic Museum; and the shady, cool granite alleys adorned with works from the AAAperto Contemporary Art Museum.

“Our village is committed to giving space to different forms of expression, rediscovering the streets, squares, and places of the historic centre as venues for authentic social interaction and sharing. A village that is the heir to ancient knowledge such as weaving and canto a tasgia, and that keeps the use of the Gallurese language alive even among the younger generations” explains Paolo Sanna, head of Pro Loco.

The streets, which still host the precious open-air tapestries by Maria Lai, will therefore serve as the stage for numerous events: the stories of the Aggju Prize for gadduresi tales and cossi, the new organ in the church of Santa Vittoria, on which the composer and organist Salvatore Spano will perform his improvisations; and the acoustic atmospheres of the duo composed of Ilaria Porceddu and Emanuele Contis in a square concert rich in cross-cultural influences that will leave a lasting impression.

“For the second year in a row, we have chosen original and powerful artistic realities capable of experimenting with unique mixes of music and language,” comments Diego Pani, “those who come to Aggius will enjoy a colourful and multifaceted soundscape, to be experienced between popular music and minority languages, world music and expressions of oral tradition, including some forays into the world of electronic music”.
